Every once in a while, things don't go as planned, but turn out way better! This was one of those times. Read on:

On a lovely summer day right after Typhoon #10 (aka ShanShan), Ship Freakzoid went to a spot in Kokura to take a look at the bay to hopefully see his finless porpoise friend and maybe see some cool ships passing by. So many ships had been anchored due to the typhoon, so heavy volume was expected.

Well, the friendly porpoise didn't show up. Poor guy was probably tired from the wind and waves. However, a heap of ships did show up. Some JMSDF vessels were among them. The first one spotted was a SUBMARINE!!!

This Oyashio-class sub of the JMSDF was heading west to east when photographed and recorded on video. The Japanese Navy seems to somehow arrange it so their ships pass by one another in the Kanmon Strait between Moji and Shimonoseki. This has been observed on more than one occasion. After the submarine passed by Kokura, a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer escort coming from the other direction passed the sub in the strait, as if meticulously coordinated. JS Tone's photos and video have also been posted.

Look closely and you'll see a Japanese submarine "chasing" a cargo ship!

Here are details on this awesome Japanese submarine which defends the great nation of Japan and the Garden Paradise Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki (the two cities it is passing by) from the evil CCP, heinous DPRK, and the nutbag "Poo-Tin":

The JMSDF (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force) Oyashio-class submarine is a class of diesel-electric submarines developed for Japan's naval defense. This class represents a significant advancement over earlier Japanese submarines and incorporates several advanced technologies and design features. Here’s a detailed overview: Overview - *Class Name:* Oyashio-class - *Type:* Diesel-electric attack submarine - *Builder:* Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries - *Entered Service:* 1998 to present - *Total Units:* 11 (as of 2024) Design and Dimensions - *Length:* Approximately 84 meters (276 feet) - *Beam:* About 9.1 meters (30 feet) - *Draft:* Around 7.5 meters (25 feet) - *Displacement:* 2,900 tons (surfaced), 3,700 tons (submerged) Propulsion - *Main Propulsion:* Diesel-electric - *Diesel Engines:* Two 3,600 kW (4,800 hp) MTU or similar engines - *Electric Motors:* Two 2,600 kW (3,500 hp) electric motors - *Battery:* Lead-acid or advanced lithium-ion battery packs for submerged operations - *Speed:* - *Surfaced:* Around 12-14 knots (22-26 km/h) - *Submerged:* Approximately 20 knots (37 km/h) Armament - *Torpedo Tubes:* 6 x 533 mm torpedo tubes - *Torpedoes:* Primarily equipped with Type 89 torpedoes (a heavyweight torpedo designed for anti-submarine warfare), which are capable of engaging both surface and underwater targets. - *Mines:* Capability to deploy naval mines. Sensors and Systems - *Sonar:* Equipped with a sophisticated sonar suite, including a bow-mounted sonar array and possibly a towed array sonar for extended detection capabilities. - *Radar:* Limited surface radar for navigation and surface target detection. - *Combat System:* Advanced combat management systems integrating sonar, fire control, and tactical information. Construction and Stealth Features - *Hull Material:* High-strength steel or composite materials for improved durability and stealth. - *Shape:* Designed with a hydrodynamic shape to minimize underwater drag and noise. - *Stealth Features:* Incorporates noise-reduction technologies such as sound-absorbing coatings and anechoic tiles to reduce sonar detection. Operational Capability - *Range:* Capable of extended deployments due to efficient diesel engines and large battery capacity. - *Endurance:* Several weeks of sustained operations submerged, depending on operational conditions and mission profiles. Modernization and Upgrades - *AIP System:* Unlike some modern submarines, the Oyashio-class does not feature Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which limits its submerged endurance compared to submarines with AIP systems. However, Japan has focused on other methods to enhance operational effectiveness and survivability. - *Electronic Upgrades:* Periodic updates to combat systems, sonar, and navigation systems to keep pace with advancements in technology. Role and Mission - *Primary Role:* Anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface ship warfare (ASuW), and intelligence gathering. - *Secondary Roles:* The Oyashio-class submarines are also involved in strategic deterrence, reconnaissance, and protecting maritime interests. Strategic Importance - The Oyashio-class plays a crucial role in Japan's naval defense strategy, particularly in monitoring and countering the activities of potential adversaries in the region. Its advanced capabilities and stealth features make it a valuable asset for maintaining maritime security and ensuring regional stability. Summary The Oyashio-class submarines represent a blend of advanced technology and traditional design principles, tailored to meet the specific needs of the JMSDF. Their combination of stealth, firepower, and operational range make them a key component of Japan’s maritime defense strategy.

THERMOPYLAE vehicles carrier RoRo ship passing thru Kanmon Straits Japan

THERMOPYLAE is a vehicles carrier (RoRo ship) and was recently photographed passing thru the Kanmon Straits between Shimonoseki City and Kitakyushu City, Japan. Thermopylae is a large vessel, and while not as long as some others,  is quite tall. It dwarfed the buildings and other ships and boats it passed on the afternoon of April 2, 2022. NYK FUTAGO container ship in Kanmon Straits at sunset

The Singapore flagged container ship NYK FUTAGO passed thru the Kanmon Straits of Japan on a lovely but hot (36C-97F) mid-September afternoon. The straits were calm.  The air was heavy. The sunset was lovely. NYK Futago was glorious.  NOTE:   NO filters used & ZERO editing done (Photoshop etc.)  Silhouette of container ship sailing at sunset - NYK FUTAGO This 267 meter long cargo ship was captured by Ship Freakazoid as it sailed through the Kanmon Strait between the Garden Paradise Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki at sunset on September 17, 2024.  As per usual, SF used his trusty secondhand Olympus E-520 DSLR camera equipped with a Zuiko 150mm lens to photograph this lovely vessel.  Settings in the above photo were:  f/11 , ISO 100 , 1/1600 sec.
