Container ship under the Kanmon Bridge in Japan   What is in the containers? Perhaps there are some toy plastic soldiers and cap guns? Maybe some knockoff Barbie and Ken dolls?   Here is some video taken with a secondhand JVC Everio video camera with 54x Konica Minolta lens: Vessel Name:    GLORY GUANDONG Length:         143 meters Width:          22 meters IMO:            9742039 Flag:            Hong Kong MMSI:            477333400 Type:            Container ship Call Sign:        VRQ04 Gross Tonnage:  9993 tons Year Built:     2017 A.D. CONFIDENCE (IMO 9865879) in Japanese waters of the Kanmon Straits

Confidence sailed the Kanmon Straits on September 27, 2024. Ship Freakazoid captured the 146 meter vessel on digital "film" for your viewing pleasure. CONFIDENCE (IMO 9865879) Container Ship in Kanmon Straits Japan The container ship was photographed from an island in the strait known as Ganryujima (Google it! It has a cool history!) which provides some excellent vantage points for getting photos and video of the passing ships. Photos were taken with a used Olympus e520 DSLR camera with Zuiko 150mm lens.  Musashi Miyamoto vs Kojiro Sasaki on Ganryujima In the video below, you can see Confidence sail thru the Kanmon Straits with, well, confidence. SF uses an older used JVC Everio 54x zoom video camera for video. A secondhand Slik tripod was also used for this footage.  The stern of Confidence indicates its home port is Majuro (Marshall Islands). Never been, but will wager it's a nice place and that the islands are beautiful.  Confidence - Container ship sailing in Japan (K

WESTERDAM sailing Japanese seas September 27, 2024

September 27, 2024 turned out to be a pretty decent day weather-wise for the greater Garden Paradise Kitakyushu vicinity. In fact, it was an almost perfect day for the cruise ship WESTERDAM of the Holland America Line to sail the Kanmon Straits. MS WESTERDAM sailing the Kanmon Straits of Japan With a length of 936 feet, a beam of 105.8 feet and 82,348 tons, the MS Westerdam was quite a sight as it sailed gracefully past Ganryujim in the Kanmon Strait between Shimonoseki City on Honshu and Kitakyushu City on Kyushu.   Photo of the starboard bow of Holland America's Westerdam   Looking at the above photos of the starboard side of the bow, one can't help but notice the passengers checking out the Shimonoseki side of the strait. Many passengers can be seen taking their own photos, perhaps of Ganryujima and the statues of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro in their famous sword fight duel to the death. Some might have been taking photographs of the Ship Freakazoid who was taking uni

NYK FUTAGO container ship in Kanmon Straits at sunset

The Singapore flagged container ship NYK FUTAGO passed thru the Kanmon Straits of Japan on a lovely but hot (36C-97F) mid-September afternoon. The straits were calm.  The air was heavy. The sunset was lovely. NYK Futago was glorious.  Silhouette of container ship sailing at sunset - NYK FUTAGO This 267 meter long cargo ship was captured by Ship Freakazoid as it sailed through the Kanmon Strait between the Garden Paradise Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki at sunset on September 17, 2024.  As per usual, SF used his trusty secondhand Olympus E-520 DSLR camera equipped with a Zuiko 150mm lens to photograph this lovely vessel.  Settings in the above photo were:  f/11 , ISO 100 , 1/1600 sec. NYK Futago passes by historic Ganryujima and phallic Kaikyo Yume Tower Japanese cities are notorious for having hideous towers in lovely places. Kyoto has a disgusting tower called, well, Kyoto Tower, which is an absolute eyesore in what is supposed to be a charming traditional city. Kitakyushu emulated Kyoto a

GRAND ACE6 Oil Tanker IMO 9375329

A cool looking tanker passed thru the Kanmon Straits. Its name? GRAND ACE6. Apparently it is neither Grand Ace Six nor Grand Ace 6, but Grand Ace6. And, it used to be called STX ACE6, but has, like so many others, changed its identity... Oil tanker sailing in the Kanmon Straits of Japan (Grand Ace6) The color scheme brightened up the strait as this lovely oil tanker / chemical tanker sailed past the vibrant bustling metropolis Garden Paradise Kitakyushu and the depressing dilapidated Shimonoseki Slums on neighboring Honshu Island. Chemical Tanker / Oil Products Tanker GRAND ACE 6 "Grand Ace 6" is painted on the ship's stern and the very important health advice "No Smoking" and safety advice "Safety First" and "Hazardous Cargo" are painted on the bridge.  Ship Freakazoid hopes all of you put safety first and don't smoke, unless you are on fire, because smoke is an important indicator to others in your immediate vicinity that you are a huma

SITC HONG KONG container ship sailing in Kanmon Strait

The container ship SITC Hong Kong passed thru the Kanmon Strait on September 3, 2024. SITC Hong Kong in the Kanmon Straits on a hazy day  A photo of Ship Freakazoid's JVC Everio video camera with 54x Konica Minolta zoom lens on a Slik tripod was taken as SITC Hong Kong passed by. Like the camcorder and tripod, the Olympus E-520 DSLR camera used to photograph them was also purchased second hand at an amazingly cheap price. Maybe there are used cameras and accessories in some of those containers? Or, maybe not... JVC Everio, Slik Tripod, and SITC Hong Kong cargo ship SITC vessels are a common sight in the Kanmon Straits of Japan. There sure are a lot of them! Many of their names start with SITC and then have the name of some port city (Hong Kong, Qinzhou, Tokyo, etc.) after. It's a good geography lesson for demented folks such as the Ship Freakazoid.
